Autograph letter signed Jacob Tonson to Sir [manuscript], 1765 May 9.

Has sent a parcel of books, including the first vol. of Buckingham's works, a copy of The rehearsal, Colman's translation of Terence, 4 vols. of the annals of Queen Ann, 14 vols. of The political state, and some franks, pens, wax &c. Has received the third volume of The spectator but shall not print it this year, so there is time to make corrections. His postscript: "I have Deliverd Mr. Garick the two parcels of Plays."

Buckingham was a royalist in the civil war. He was voted a traitor by the House of Commons in 1648, and his estate was sequestered. He escaped from England in 1648, becoming a privy councilor of the exiled Charles II. He fought for the king in defeat at Worcester in 1651 but later became estranged from him.
